Many years ago, I was surfing the internet & I came across an offer that I just couldn't see myself refusing. It was on the Richmond Poe Museum website & it was something I couldn't live w/out. It had all started w/a 'good news/bad news' type situation. The bad news was the last Manhattan residence of Edgar A. Poe was being torn down. You can probably guess the good news. That's right, they were making the actual bricks from the building available for purchase for a measly $80. I was about to jump at the chance when I realized I should probably consult my wife on such an expensive purchase. My wife, as it turns out, is not quite as impressed w/historic building materials as I am, but w/a little persuasion (see begging) I was able to talk her into it. & now I am the proud owner of an $80 Edgar A. Poe brick from his last Manhattan residence. Yes, I'll admit I am prouder of that than I probably should be. Still, I think it is a cool thing for any Poe fan to have in their collection & it is inspiring to me as a writer. Speaking of which, I hope you enjoyed this week's comic strip. Be here this Thursday for another exciting installment of this adventure. & be sure to check back every Monday & Thursday for a new Boogieland strip! Also, be sure to visit the real Boogieland in person any Sunday from 12 noon to 4pm. Admission is free! Click HERE for more info. Thanks for reading!
One great Poe memory that I'll always cherish, which is also slightly tied in w/comics, was the time my friends Jonathan, Griff & I all went to the Baltimore Comic Convention. Being in Baltimore for the first time, it seemed appropriate to make a point to seek out the final resting place of my favorite poet. A small group of us left the convention center & after wandering for what seemed like forever, we finally reached Poe's grave. It was well worth the journey just to be at that historic site. Next time maybe I'll tell you the story of the $80 brick.
Be here this Monday for that & of course an all new installment in the saga. & be sure to check back every Monday & Thursday for a new Boogieland strip! Not that long ago, I had a birthday tradition which involved going to the Poe Museum in Richmond, VA. My birthday is in the fall, so the weather & scenery always seemed perfect for such a visit. These days my birthday tradition each year involves going to Boogie's Wrestling Camp. Another reason why it is fun for me to put these two favorites together in the same comic strip.
