Congratulations to Rashad Jennings & Emma Slater on winning the Mirrorball Championship for season 24 of Dancing W/The Stars! Rashad Jennings is from my hometown of Lynchburg, VA, so it was exciting to watch him compete & excel in the dance competition each & every week! Rashad is not just a hometown hero because he is an NFL running back & now DWTS Champion, he is really a hero because of all the ways he gives back to our community. The Rashad Jennings Foundation holds an annual Camp 180 Football camp where they teach kids valuable lessons about football & about life. One year at the camp, my son Douglas actually got to block for Rashad during one of the camp drills! RJF also puts on a big Family Fun Fest w/live music, food, games & all kinds of fun! It was an honor for me personally to be one of the performers at an RJF Open Mic Night hosted by Rashad himself. The Shad Squad doesn't just make an impact in our hometown. The RJF impact is felt worldwide w/all of their many programs to promote youth fitness & education. Rashad's Mirrorball trophy was well deserved for all the hard work on the dance floor, but I'm sure the smiling faces of the kids who have had their lives changed forever by the RJF are an even sweeter reward for Rashad & the Foundation. Congrats Rashad & Emma on your big win! Thank you Shad for all you do! Check out the official Rashad Jennings Foundation website to see how you can help make a difference! I've often talked about the picture of Jimmy Valiant I had on my wall when I was a kid. It was a pin-up from Double Action Wrestling Vol 1 #5. That original pin-up is lost to the ages, unfortunately. This past Sat, after a nice visit w/Boogie & some BWC Family members at Hopar's Cycles in Roanoke, VA, I found another copy of Double Action Wrestling Vol 1 #5 at The Basement Toys and Comics. I immediately headed back to Hopar's, which is thankfully only about 5 minutes away from The Basement, & I got the Jimmy Valiant pic from my childhood signed by Boogie himself! Once I find a nice frame, it will go back on my wall where it belongs! Check out the pic below of Boogie & me posing w/that awesome childhood pic while doing our best Boogie faces! Obviously, his is better! Another picture suitable for framing is today's Boogieland or Bust comic strip! At least in my opinion anyway. Thanks for reading! Mother's Day is almost here! I can't possibly express in words how thankful I am to have such an incredible Mom! I'm so thankful that my wife, Gala, is a wonderful mom to my son, Douglas. I'm thankful that my mother-in-law, Joanne, is the best mother-in-law ever! I'm thankful to Angel for being our awesome BWC Mom. I'm incredibly blessed w/all the women in my life who are amazing moms! Thanks so much for everything Mom! I love you! & thank you to all the other moms for all that you do! Happy Mother's Day! Free Comic Book Day was a lot of fun this year! Douglas & I got some cool complimentary comics! My favorite of the lot was the Underdog comic which ended up being extra cool because it contained a story by one of my favorite comic book writers, Steve Skeates. I used to trade small press comics w/Steve in the good ol' Blue Plaque Publications days! After we got our free comics, we went to my co-worker Duncan's house for a Star Wars party! Then, that night we went to another party to celebrate my wife, Gala's birthday! Happy Birthday Sweetie! It was a fun day & a great weekend! Be back this Thurs., for another exciting Boogieland comic strip! I highly recommend a visit to the real Boogieland in person this Sunday or any Sunday, from 12 noon to 4pm. Admission is free! This past Sunday was a very special day at BWC. The ring was filled w/several BWC wrestlers all competing for the honor of having their name added to the prestigious Curtis Parker Memorial Cup. The last person standing at the end of the match would get bragging rights for the rest of the year. The Parker Cup is named in honor of Frank 'The Tank' Parker's father, Curtis. Curtis Parker was a huge fan & supporter of Boogie's Wrestling Camp. He did so much for the camp through the years & his memory will always be alive at the Boogieland Compound, especially on Parker Cup Sunday. I've always said that you never know what to expect at BWC & you never know when something extra special will happen. The ending of this year's Parker Cup Battle Royal was a perfect example of both of those statements in action. Senior referee Patrick Lancaster was stationed outside the ring for most of the match to officially eliminate a wrestler once they hit the floor. When the smoke cleared & only Shawn Cruz & Mike Mars remained standing in the ring, Patrick joined them inside the squared circle to better officiate the ending of the match. It looked like the bout could go either way as ring veteran Cruz did battle w/powerful new wrestling star, Big Mike. As the two competitors waged a war near the ropes, they ended up pushing each other over at the same time. At exactly the same moment, both wrestlers hit the floor. W/the last two wrestlers eliminated at exactly the same time, the only fair thing to do was to award the match & the Parker Cup to the last person standing in the ring. In this case that person was referee Patrick Lancaster. What a well deserverd honor for one of the elite officials in the business today. Congrats Patrick! The Valiant Cup/Parker Cup weekend was a complete success! A ring-full of BWC wrestlers did battle in front of a packed house at the EWA show in Elkin, NC for the right to hold the Valiant Cup high in victory! Most woould say that's an honor that should have went to big Mike Mars, since he was the last man standing in the Valiant Cup battle royal. However, there are many ways to win a match & since the refs didn't see Charlie Abbott's feet touch the floor, he wisely, though certainly dishonestly, got back in the ring & threw big Mike out for the controversial victory. Another highlight of the Valiant Cup show was a knock down, drag out North Carolina Street Fight between Jimmy Valiant & Shawn Christian that has to be seen to be believed! Be back this Thursday for another Boogieland strip & for my report on a very special Park Cup day at BWC! Don't miss it!
