This week's program was a perfect example of the diversity of the guests that Boogie & Co. bring to the Main Event Thursday show each & every week. Big John Murray is a former pro wrestler who was trained by the legendary Les Thatcher & went on to gain nationwide fame as Bret Michaels' friend & bodygaurd as documented in three seasons of the smash hit VH1 show, Rock of Love. Big John discussed a wide variety of topics including finding his soul mate, the Rock of Love show, his very first wrestling match, getting in the zone, the Brian Pillman memorial shows, how his background in wrestling prepared him for his current success, being Bret Michaels' bodyguard & friend, how Bret turned the tables by saving his life, & much more. Jimmy discussed his recent return to the ring in Shawsville & both wrestlers talked about the importance of overcoming addictions. At the end of another top notch show, Angel announced Boogie's upcoming appearances & invited everyone to BWC for the Fourth of July this Sunday. Boogie closed the show by announcing next week's guest as WWE Hall of Famer & former tag champ, Nikolai Volkoff. Be sure to call 1-888-639-4900 this Thursday, July 8th, to ask either Hall of Famer a question.

Wrestling legend Dominic Denucci graced the Main Event Thursday airwaves this week w/intellegent, insightful answers to the fans' questions about his life & career. He touched on such topics as wrestling in Madison Square Garden, how he stays in good shape, wrestling against the Valiant Brothers, why he learned to speak multiple languages, the importance of giving your all for the fans in every match, what makes a good wrestling opponent, his first ever pro wrestling championship, his amateur background, training Mick Foley & much more. Jimmy also talked about wrestling in Madison Square Garden, told a story about trying to avoid Moose Cholak's famous 'El Squasho' move, his former tag team partners, & more. It was another excellent hour that went by way too fast, but I enjoyed every miniute of it. Angel kept the listeners informed of the busy weekend plans & Boogie announced next week's guest to be former wrestler turned rock 'n' roll bodyguard, Big John Murray from the hit VH1 show Rock of Love. Be sure to call 1-888-639-4900, this Thursday, to ask Big John a question.
The annual ‘Springtime Bash’ Shawsville Fundraiser wrestling show may have taken place over a month ago, but when I drove past Shawsville Middle School just the other day, I could still hear the echo of the roaring crowd reverberating into wrestling history! BWC Hall of Famer The Hangman Bruce Pobanz recently sent me some wonderful pictures he took both at the show that night & at BWC the next day for the big Q&A session w/Boogie & Ivan. I’ve posted some of them below for your enjoyment. As a wrestling fan on Father’s Day, it’s easy to be reminded of such legendary fathers & sons as Blackjack Mulligan & his boy Barry, Angelo Poffo & his sons Lanny & Randy, & even the Orton clan of Senior, Junior & Randy. The list could go on & on, but my favorite wrestling related Father’s Day memory took place in Shawsville, VA. Three years ago, on my third Father’s Day, I got in my car w/my wife Gala & our precious son, Douglas so that Gala could take me to a surprise destination. That destination ended up being Boogie’s Wrestling Camp, which my wife picked because she knew it is one of my favorite places in the world. That was the first of two Father’s Day surprises that would ultimately change my life that day. The second surprise came about two hours later during the camp meeting. Boogie was nice enough to introduce me as he usually does for visitors, but then he floored me w/the announcement that he & Angel had been talking about bringing me on as an official BWC Staff Member. Sure enough, by the end of that day, Boogie had taken my picture to go on the staff board & by my next visit, my Polaroid pic had proudly joined my fellow staff members on the wall. It was a tremendous honor to be brought into the BWC family as a staff member & it is an honor & a position that I take very seriously. I do everything I can to support the camp & spread the word about the wonderful place that it is. This tremendous honor was made extra special because I was able to share it w/my beautiful wife & wonderful son. It was a very thoughtful Father’s Day Gift that I will never forget. Happy Father’s Day to all of the fathers reading this & every father in the entire BWC family!
Boogie's guest this week was none other than ECW legend Tommy Dreamer. Just hours after Main Event Thursday ended, Tommy made his initial iMPACT appearance for TNA. His debut for the company came at the recent Slammiversary PPV. On Main Event Thursday, Dreamer not only talked about signing w/TNA, he also discussed a variety of topics w/Boogie, Angel, Big Dog, Jamie & the listening audience. He spoke about his days in ECW including the scaffold match w/Brian Lee & how that match could have accidentally ended his life. Tommy also gave the fans insight into his feuds w/Sandman & Raven, plus the origin of his Spicolli Driver finisher & much, much more. Boogie himself fielded questions about being an entrance music innovator & people who helped him get into the wrestling business. Angel announced Boogie's upcoming appearances & next week's guest was announced to be WWWF legend & former World Tag Team Champion Dominic DeNucci! Be sure to call in to
1-888-639-4900 this coming Thursday from 5pm-6pm to ask DeNucci about ending the Valiant Brothers' year plus championship reign, training Mick Foley, or any other question you can think of for this pro wrestling great! Jeff Jarrett was scheduled to be this week's guest, but for reasons beyond my knowledge, he unfortunately wasn't able to make it. Maybe it will work out for him to come on as a guest at some point in the future. As they say, the show must go on & fortunately, one of Jimmy's former Valiant brothers, Willie 'Jammin' Jake' Valiant, stepped in to make the save & proved to be an excellent guest for the show. He & Jimmy entertained the listening audience with hilarious road stories from their days together as a tag team & answered questions for the callers. Topics discussed included his part in continuing the famous Valiant Brothers name, fulfilling his dream of becoming a wrestler, memories of Moose Cholak and much more. Big Dog & Boogie finished the show by reminiscing about the good old days of Georgia Championship Wrestling & Jim Crockett Promotions, followed by Angel announcing that Boogie would be appearing this Saturday, June 12th at the big Superman Celebration in Metropolis, IL. Come by & say hi if you are in the area. & finally, get your questions ready for next week's guest, none other than ECW legend & former champion Tommy Dreamer! Tune in next Thursday, June 10th for that exciting show on 101.7 FM in the New River Valley or go online to www.supersports1017.com anywhere else in the world! Hope to hear you next Thursday!
I just finished listening to the first installment of season two of Main Event Thursday & I’m happy to report that it picked up right where last season left off. It was wonderful to hear Boogie & Angel back in the studio w/Big Dog, Jamie & today’s special guest, Ricky Morton, one half of the legendary Rock N Roll Express. The listeners who called in asked some great questions, but more importantly, Ricky gave excellent, entertaining answers to each question. The popular wrestler spoke on subjects such as giving pointers to the young, upcoming stars, taking part in the Ultimate Death Match series of movies, early Memphis memories, wrestling Boogie, the ‘Richard Morton’ period of his career & much more. He also announced the upcoming launch of an official Ricky Morton website & a very exciting film project that he is currently working on. As a BWC Staff Member, it was nice to hear him comment on the fine wrestling education available at Boogie’s Wrestling Camp. It was especially great just to hear these two wrestling stars reminisce about their time together from the early days in Memphis through the JCP era & into the present. Both men talked about getting goose bumps throughout the show & as a wrestling fan I was getting goose bumps right along with them! As the show neared its close, Angel announced their upcoming appearances including of course every Sunday from 12pm to 4pm at BWC. & speaking of goose bumps, I am always in suspense at the end of the show until Boogie announces next week’s guest. & the announcement has never been a disappointment. Be sure not to miss next week when Boogie, Angel & the gang will talk to none other than WWE, WCW & TNA superstar, Double J, Jeff Jarrett! I can’t wait! Tune in next Thursday, June 10th for that exciting show on 101.7 FM in the New River Valley or www.supersports1017.com anywhere else in the world!
When I first heard sometime in 2009 that Boogie & Angel were in the process of possibly starting a weekly radio show I was thrilled at the prospect, but since it wasn’t set in stone, I tried not to get overly excited. Later that year, when I heard the announcement that the deal had been made & that my favorite wrestler & his wife were indeed going to be live on air every week, I went ahead & got excited. When I was a kid, I used to have the privilege of tuning in to NWA TV every week to watch the Boogie Woogie Man do his thing in & out of the ring. Unfortunately, as the 80s wound down, Handsome Jimmy went back to Mempho & my weekly dose quickly dissipated. So you can imagine I was pretty stoked when Main Event Thursday officially launched on the Big Dog’s Sports Talk show from 5pm to 6pm & I was able to once more tune in week after week to spend some quality air time w/Boogie & friends. The show started out w/a bang w/the Russian Bear Ivan Koloff as the inaugural guest. & it never slowed down. Every Thursday meant another true wrestling legend would be joining Big Dog & the Valiants. Jimmy & Angel made sure to offer variety to their listeners as they brought in not only legendary champion wrestlers, but also a manager, a ring announcer & even a prolific wrestling columnist. & perhaps the best part was that the listeners were part of the show as they got to call in & ask questions or just say hello. Thanks to the Main Event Thursday show, I had the honor of talking to former WWWF champions like Superstar Billy Graham & Ivan Koloff & long time NWA champion Dory Funk, Jr. I even got to talk to one of my favorite crazy characters from childhood, none other than Crazy Bugsy McGraw! & that’s just to name a few of the wrestling icons that sat down to chat w/Boogie, Angel, Big Dog, Jamie & the listening audience. I admit I was understandably sad when summer was almost gone & season one came to a close. But I took comfort in the fact that a new season would be here before anyone knew it & sure enough, season two of Main Event Thursday is all ready to go starting Thursday, June 3rd & running through August 26th. The first guest has just been announced & it is none other than one half of the Rock N Roll Express, Ricky Morton! From his nearly countless championships to his legendary feuds w/the Russians, the Horseman & of course the Midnight Express, there will be so much for fans to ask this seasoned tag team wrestling veteran. I’m sure the fastest hour on the radio will be jam packed full of calls, questions & rock n roll! Don’t miss out! You can tune in to 101.7 FM in the New River Valley area or you can get the show on the internet at www.supersports1017.com anywhere in the world. Also, be sure to call w/your question for Ricky Morton & all the guests from week to week at 1-888-639-4900. Main Event Thursday is back, Jack & better than ever! Don’t you dare miss it!
“I love six… I had six old ladies! I had six tacos for breakfast this morning! Six tacos for breakfast! I got six Cadillacs! I got six Doberman Pinchers! I love six!” –Jimmy Valiant & now Jimmy Valiant has one more six to love, because as of May 1st, 2010, he has now wrestled in six consecutive decades. He shares this personal record with his former enemy turned dear friend the Russian Bear Ivan Koloff. At the recent Springtime Bash in Shawsville, VA the two old school wrestling legends teamed up to teach a lesson to the new school team of Shawn Christian & Mean Donnie Green w/manager Bobby O’Neil. This year’s Bash was a great success as people came from all over to pack the Shawsville Middle School for the six main event caliber matches. I enjoyed every minute of every match & if I wasn’t on the edge of my seat it was because I was standing to cheer for my favorite wrestlers. But the highlight for me was certainly the historic debut of the Valiant/Koloff tag team. Led by their manager Colonel Howard, Boogie danced his way up the aisle as Ivan menacingly stalked to the ring as if he were ready to tear his opponents apart. Sure enough, it wasn’t long into the match before Koloff was attempting to separate Donnie Green’s arm from the rest of his body. The big Russian wrestling machine even took on both of his opponents at once in order to thwart a devious double team attempt. I certainly gained a new respect for Ivan Koloff that night. Valiant took care of business in the ring by combining his quickness, his vast wrestling knowledge, his brawling ability & his trademark mind games to frustrate & dominate his enemies. When Boogie slapped the sleeper on Christian & Ivan clamped Green in the same hold I thought it was going to be Good Night Irene for the new school & this great match. But the two young wrestling stars proved that they are in fact a team to be reckoned with as they fought back & temporarily gained the momentum. Boogie set up the beginning of the end by dodging a devastating Shawn Christian super kick which instead toppled Mean Donnie. What happened next was the stuff of wrestling legend & will certainly be talked about for decades to come. Ivan Koloff leveled Green with his classic Russian Sickle & at the same time Boogie nailed Christian with a move right off of current wrestling television. I’m not sure what Jimmy calls his version of the finisher. It could be the Boogie Man Jam or perhaps the BWCKO. I’ve even heard it referred to as the Boogie Cutter. Whatever it’s called it was highly effective & both Boogie & Ivan covered their opponents for the three count victory which brought the crowd to its feet. On a personal note it was an extra special night for me because I was able to share it with my precious wife & son. My son Douglas has been to camp several times, but this was his first official wrestling show. I’m so glad I was able to share it with him. You can even see a picture of my family along with several awesome pictures & a nice write up about the Shawsville show in the NRV Current section of a recent issue of the Roanoke Times. Here is a link to the online version. I am the one w/the mask. Congrats to Boogie & Ivan on wrestling in six consecutive decades. & congrats to the entire BWC family & the community of Shawsville for putting on an awesome night of top notch wrestling action that will never be forgotten. Wrestling history is about to be made. & I have every intention of being there to witness it as it happens. I wasn’t there when the Russian Bear Ivan Koloff ended Bruno Sammartino’s reign of almost eight years as WWWF World Champion. I wasn’t there when Jimmy & Johnny Valiant, the notorious Valiant Brothers, defeated Tony Garea & Dean Ho to begin a record breaking (not to mention rule breaking) run w/the WWWF World Tag Team Championship titles. But I have already marked my calendar & made my travel arrangements to make sure that I am in attendance when Jimmy Valiant makes a triumphant return from retirement to form an unlikely tag team w/former foe Ivan Koloff at Shawsville Middle School in Shawsville, VA on May 1st for the Springtime Bash fundraiser show. I will be there to see both men return to the ring to accomplish their goal of wrestling in a remarkable six different decades. I will be there to see the ring fill w/talent for the gigantic battle royal to see who will walk away w/the prestigious Valiant Cup. I will watch as bodies hit the floor until there is only one man standing. & no matter who gets their hand raised I will applaud them as they are awarded the Valiant Cup because they will have earned my respect. I will be there when a soldier takes on a tank as Sgt. Long will try to take the BWC Title from Frank ‘The Tank’ Parker. & as all the other main event matches unfold, I will be there to enjoy every moment. I will stand together w/the no doubt packed house of wall to wall wrestling fans & I will celebrate the day, the community, & the sport itself as we witness true wrestling history in the making.
